Listen for the Pop when Chipping

Golf Sage - Friday, April 05, 2013

Listen for the “pop” of the ball landing on the green before you look up. You cannot influence the chip after you have hit the ball, so keep your head down.  Deny your ego which wants to look up and see if the result is good. This may be the most important concept in golf.
It takes incredible discipline to execute this swing key on every chip shot, but the results are worth the effort.  You will hole out or leave the ball very close to the hole more often when you commit to listen for the sound on every chip shot.
When you keep your head down and still long after impact, this ensures your head was down and still at the exact moment of impact.  If your head moves just before or at impact, it will move your shoulders slightly up and to the left.  This will change your clubhead path to outside-to-inside and slightly close the clubface.  Great chipping requires the perfect precision of a straight clubhead path and a square clubface at the exact moment of impact.
You will be amazed at how many chips you hole out when you listen for the sound every time you hit a chip shot.
