DOWNSWING

Starting Down dot Through Impact dot Feel

Arnold Palmer's Hard and Quick Leg Drive

A fundamentally perfect downswing makes it easy to deliver a square clubface to the ball at impact, producing straight, high, powerful golf shots.

  1. Arnie starts his downswing with a powerful, smooth, lateral leg drive. His hips and knees really fire hard toward the target. This great weight transfer back to his left side starts this sequence of motion—legs lead shoulders, shoulders lead arms, arms lead hands, and hands lead the clubhead through impact. This sequence of motion creates maximum leverage in your swing, so you can hit the ball as far as possible.
  2. On the downswing, Arnie preserves the angle of his cocked wrists as long as possible. It is not until the second half of the downswing that his wrists release. The later in the downswing the wrists release, the more leverage your swing has, and the more power you can deliver at impact.
  3. On the second half of the downswing, Arnie drives his right leg and right knee hard at the ball. This adds great power to your golf swing and maximizes the distance you can hit the ball.

Here is an example swing key from the Downswing chapter of Modern Golf Thoughts:

LEAD WITH YOUR LEGS

Always start the downswing with your legs. This will whip your hands through impact naturally and effortlessly, producing straight, high, powerful shots.

Make your legs do all the work during the downswing. Start your downswing with a powerful, smooth, lateral leg drive. Your hips, legs, and knees must drive hard toward the target, while you feel you are leaving your hands at the top of the backswing. Trust your legs to make the downswing and pull your upper body through the ball.

This leg motion produces a great weight transfer back to your left side and starts this sequence of motion—legs lead torso, torso leads shoulders, shoulders lead arms, arms lead hands, and hands lead the clubhead through impact. This sequence of motion, with larger muscles leading smaller muscles creates maximum leverage in your swing, so you can hit the ball as far as possible. Feel like your legs are whipping your hands through impact, naturally and effortlessly.

On the downswing, forget your upper body, and you will get effortless, maximum distance on your shots. Your hands feel delayed, in super-slow motion as your legs pull them down from the top of the backswing.

The Downswing chapter of Modern Golf Thoughts has 29 swing keys in these sections--Starting Down / Through Impact / Feel.

Some key downswing fundamentals include--leading the downswing with your legs, which pull your upper body down through impact, your hands come down from the top of the backswing very slowly, and taking divots with your iron shots--meaning more backspin on your shots and ensuring accuracy. It is also critical to keep your head still through impact so your shoulders do not rise up early--taking your swing off the proper downswing plane and making it impossible to deliver a square clubface at impact.
